Welcome to Dubrovnik! Tom & I took a flight from London to Dubrovnik and were welcomed by a burning sunset (and extremely hot evening)! We booked most of our holiday accommodation with Airbnb because 1) so much cheaper than hotels, especially in peak season when all the hotels are booked out months beforehand anyway & 2) we were really keen to live like a local and explore the unique places that you can only find when you book private rental. We booked an apartment in Gruž, a neighbourhood that was a 5-10 min bus ride from old town. I was mainly swayed by the breathtaking balcony view.. The area here is quiet, scenic and much less populated with tourists (compared to old town Dubrovnik). It's the place where the main port is as well as the main bus station, making it an easy place to travel to and travel out of. Plus the buses to old town were extremely frequent (for us we could catch three lines - 1A, 1B & 3).In Gruž, there's a daily fruit, vege and fish market by the harbour where you can go and stock up on all your food supplies. For essentials, there's a small grocery store by the name of Pemo. For eating out, there's a heap of options. We ate at a few places around the harbour and our favourites would have to be:1) Lobby Gourmet & Bar: this place is extremely popular with the locals and every time we walk past it's always packed. We gave it a try and were pleasantly surprised by the friendly service, casual atmosphere and great food at reasonable prices.2) Amfora: We were recommended Amfora by our Airbnb host - it's also got rave reviews on TripAdvisor too. This dining spot serves Croatian cuisine including the popular cuttlefish risotto which looks unappetising but actually tastes amazing!3) Konobas: Konobas (or 'taverns') are family run restaurants and are very popular places to eat at. There are a few around here and one that we tried was Konoba-Pizzeria Blindinj. It's on the opposite side of Gruž (the walk is not too long) and is situated in a lovely location overlooking the water. My most favourite thing about the harbour was the view. I took photos of it every day and later realised that basically every image looks the same (..) but hey, it was so so beautiful. Also, the locals here are big on growing their own fruit - you'll see grape vines, pomegranate trees, lime trees, lemon trees, fig trees and olive trees wherever you walk, it's so beautiful to see fruit everywhere!Next up I'll be taking you to Old City Dubrovnik. This is where all the tourist action happens!
